DescriptionPhloretin, also known as dihydronaringenin or phloretol, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 2'-hydroxy-dihydrochalcones. These are organic compounds containing dihydrochalcone skeleton that carries a hydroxyl group at the 2'-position. Thus, phloretin is considered to be a flavonoid lipid molecule. Phloretin is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral. Phloretin is an odorless tasting compound. Phloretin is found, on average, in the highest concentration within apples. Phloretin has also been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as sweet rowanberries, chinese broccoli, common salsifies, wild carrots, and saskatoon berries. This could make phloretin a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods.
