DescriptionCoproporphyrinogen I belongs to the class of organic compounds known as porphyrins. Porphyrins are compounds containing a fundamental skeleton of four pyrrole nuclei united through the alpha-positions by four methine groups to form a macrocyclic structure. Coproporphyrinogen I exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to plants to humans. Coproporphyrinogen I has been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as mangos (Mangifera indica), nectarines (Prunus persica var. nucipersica), herbs and spices, saskatoon berries (Amelanchier alnifolia), and black mulberries (Morus nigra). This could make coproporphyrinogen I a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. Based on a literature review a significant number of articles have been published on Coproporphyrinogen I.
