Butenolides are dihydrofurans with a carbonyl group at the C2 carbon atom. 2-chloro-trans-dienelactone is slightly soluble (in water) and a moderately acidic compound (based on its pKa). 2-chloro-trans-dienelactone can be found in a number of food items such as giant butterbur, soy bean, common persimmon, and salmonberry, which makes 2-chloro-trans-dienelactone a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products.
