| Description | Jujube, Ziziphus jujuba, is a species in the buckthorn family Rhamnaceae. Native to China, it is widely consumed in China and Korea. The fruit is an edible oval drupe, with a smooth-green color when immature, maturing to brown to purplish-black, and eventually wrinkled. It has a taste similar to an apple with lower acidity and a sweet odor. Jujube is rich in antioxidants and has been linked to several health benefits, including alleviating stress and improving sleep quality (PMID: 34128368). The fruit contains a high amount of vitamin C and flavonoids. In traditional Chinese medicine, the fruit and its seeds are used to alleviate stress and improve sleep quality (PMID: 39354208). Jujube is also used in the production of sweetened tea syrup, juice, and vinegar. A peculiar mode of preparation is smoking the fruit, which is commonly consumed in Vietnam and referred to as black jujubes. | ||||||||||
