Description4-hydroxysphinganine is a member of the class of compounds known as 1,3-aminoalcohols. 1,3-aminoalcohols are organic compounds containing an alkyl chain with an amine group bound to the C1 atom and an alcohol group bound to the C3 atom. 4-hydroxysphinganine is practically insoluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). 4-hydroxysphinganine can be found in a number of food items such as fenugreek, citrus, chestnut, and boysenberry, which makes 4-hydroxysphinganine a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products.
