DescriptionThe Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a tropical plant native to South America, specifically present-day Brazil and Paraguay. It is now widely cultivated in many countries, with Costa Rica, Philippines, and Brazil being among the top producers and consumers. Pineapples are consumed fresh, cooked, juiced, and preserved, and are found in a wide array of cuisines. The fruit has a tough, waxy exterior and a juicy, sweet interior with a tropical flavor and aroma. Pineapples are rich in vitamin C and manganese, providing various health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The most notable chemical in pineapple is bromelain, a mixture of proteolytic enzymes (PMID: 34681298). In addition to its culinary uses, pineapple is also used in the production of the textile fiber piña, and its leaves are used to produce wallpaper and furnishings. A peculiar mode of preparation is the use of pineapple as a meat tenderizer, where the bromelain breaks down protein fibers (PMID: 3287010).
