DescriptionMuskmelon, Cucumis melo, is a species of melon native to Africa and Asia. It is widely cultivated and consumed in many parts of the world, particularly in the United States, China, and Turkey. The fruit is a versatile ingredient used in various culinary preparations, including fresh consumption, drying, cooking, and oil production. The flesh of muskmelon is sweet or bland, with or without a musky aroma, and the rind can be smooth, ribbed, wrinkled, or netted. The fruit is approximately 90% water, 9% carbohydrates, and less than 1% each of protein and fat. Muskmelon is rich in vitamin C and potassium, providing several health benefits, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The most notable chemical in muskmelon is citrulline, an amino acid with potential medicinal uses (PMID: 33376745). In some cultures, muskmelon is used to produce melon oil, which has industrial applications. Interestingly, muskmelon is often dried to preserve it for later consumption, and its seeds are used to produce melon oil (PMID: 24363615).
