DescriptionThe common walnut, (Juglans regia) is a tree nut native to the region stretching from the Balkans eastward to the Himalayas and southwest China, but is widely cultivated across Europe. It is mostly eaten in Europe and other parts of the world where it is cultivated. The culinary uses of the food include ice cream, bakery goods, confections, salads, fish, pork, chicken, vegetables, and pasta dishes. The kernel has a rich flavor, with a brown color, and a distinct nutty odor. The health benefits of the food include being rich in dietary minerals such as manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, iron, vitamin B6, thiamine, and folate, as well as essential fatty acids (PMID: 25747270). The most notable chemical in the food is oleic acid (PMID: 30931854). The medicinal use of the food includes being used as a source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Peculiarly, the whole fruit, including the husk, falls in autumn, and the kernel is often dried to enhance its flavor and texture.
