| Description | Melogold is a hybrid fruit resulting from the cross between diploid pomelo (Citrus maxima) and tetraploid grapefruit (Citrus paradisi). Native to Southeast Asia, Melogold is widely cultivated and consumed in the United States, particularly in California. The fruit has a relatively thin skin and is often eaten fresh, peeled like an orange or scooped with a grapefruit spoon. When ripe, Melogold has a green skin and a sweet, grapefruit-like flavor. Rich in vitamin C and flavonoids, Melogold provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. The most notable chemical compound in Melogold is limonene, a natural oil with antimicrobial properties (PMID: 37241861, PMID: 37826891). In addition to its culinary uses, Melogold has medicinal applications, including the treatment of digestive issues.
